Do we have moral obligation to prevent climate change - Taiwan

After reading the excerpt from Watt-Cloutier on climate change I think it is necessary for us to make some sort of positive global impact on the world. In the article it stated that the polar caps in these glacier rich regions are starting to melt causing rising sea levels and natural disasters we have never seen before. According to the Taiwan Tribune just recently a giant typhoon which was eventually categorized as “Super” ran through the country of Taiwan causing thousands of citizens and tourists to evacuate from some areas of the tiny island off the coast of China. The typhoon reached levels of 141 miles per hour causing tons of flooding to hit the country throughout. Phone lines, internet connections were cut out due to the weather making it hard to reach loved ones and friends who lived in Taiwan. This struggle became ever present for my sister as she has lots of friends from her college days living there now. The typhoon is so big that it is expected or already may have touched parts of mainland China and Japan before fizzling out. Thankfully no deaths were reported but this is just an example of what could happen if we don’t consciously start worrying about the environment around us. It should not be as Americans our sole duty to fix the environment however, it should be a global collaborative effort. In the article the author suggested that global warming be considered a human rights issue and I completely agree.  There should be global initiatives to create more solar powered housing and cars that can operate on a renewable-resource rather than oil or electric. After checking water.org I saw that it does not operate in Taiwan. This company caters to more 3rd world or impoverished countries, however after the Typhoon hits people of Taiwan would probably need assistance and certain items like clean drinking water to help them get back on their feet. The countries water.org works in Asia are Bangladesh, Cambodia, India, Indonesia and the Philippines. Greenpeace which is another organization that is environmentally friendly is not stationed in Taiwan either. In Southeast Asia they are in Thailand, Philippines and Indonesia. Going forward we need more companies and organizations like these to get the ball rolling on environmental protection and to create initiatives to be presented to the United Nations for a global plan to combat global warming. I feel if we do this we can be the generation to help the environment for the better.
